Plate Girder Flange Fractures – Lessons Learned

Two significant long-span tapered plate girders at the roof level recently experienced bottom flange fractures where a hanger extended through the bottom flange to support the heavy floor below. The girders spanned 26.5 meters, were 2.4 meters in depth at the hanger, with flanges 100 mm thick and 915 mm wide. Two similar girders that used a different fabrication sequence did not fail.
