Kitchener
The Kitchener Chapter, formerly the Golden Triangle Chapter, centers itself in the tri-city area of Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph, ON and includes a wide area west to London and north to Owen Sound. This area is well-established historically as a zone of intense manufacturing including many, many industries that employ welding as a primary process. Much of the welding and fabrication work supports the automotive sector as well as many highly engineered custom and structural fabrication shops. The Kitchener Chapter Executive has close ties to the renowned welding programs offered at Conestoga College. The faculty at the College were the founding members of the Chapter dating back to the days when the organization was called the Canadian Welding Society (CWS) and Welding Institute of Canada (WIC).
We represent over 2,000 CWB Association members in the region. The growth of the CWB Association has been reflective within the Kitchener Chapter, and we intend to offer our members and non-members alike professional development and networking opportunities. The Chapter plans events at least once a month from September to June. Typical events include: single speaker evenings, dinner seminars, plant tours and other events throughout the season. Occasionally we have technical sessions with other societies and associations including the AWS, SME, ASM, and CINDE among others interested in hosting mutually interesting topics. We also plan joint meetings with our fellow CWB Association chapters and have a mentoring role with the Student Chapter of Conestoga College.
Presently, the Chapter is planning the 2020-2021 meeting schedule. We will be pleased to offer you an event calendar to review shortly, in the meantime follow us at one of our social media accounts (, , ) to stay up to date on all upcoming events! If you have any suggestions on events we could organize, please get in touch with us.
Thank you for visiting our page, and on behalf of the Chapter, we hope to see you at one of our events.

Welding Electrodes: Coated-Solid-Cored: A technical presentation by Jim Galloway
Thursday, March 14th at 7:00 pm EST on Teams
This presentation will explain the various classification systems for steel welding electrodes used for shielded metal arc welding (‘stick’), gas metal arc welding (‘mig’), and the cored wires used for flux and metal cored welding. In certain cases, these processes can be used for direct current electrode positive polarity, negative polarity, or alternating current based upon the application. The Canadian electrode classification is documented in CSA W48, however the American Welding Society (AWS) system is also common in industry, and both systems have many commonalities.
Speakers BIO: Jim Galloway is a Professor and the Coordinator of Welding Programs at Conestoga College in Cambridge, Ontario. He holds a B.A.Sc. in Industrial Engineering Technology, is a Certified Engineering Technologist, and is a graduate of Conestoga’s weld tech programs. He is also a Journeyman Welder (Red Seal) and an International Welding Technologist (IWT). Over his 40-year career he has worked as a welding inspector and R&D technologist in the power generation sector, a technical manager in the rail-car manufacturing industry, and the manufacturing manager for an automated production machinery manufacturer. Jim also volunteers with several CSA Technical committees, including CSAW117.2 (welding safety), CSC26 (arc welding equipment), and CSAW48 (electrodes & filler metals).

Electrical Hazard Reduction In Arc Welding
When: September 25th, 2019
Where: Conestoga College - Cambridge Campus Room A1326
This presentation will focus on the electrical shock hazards associated with arc welding operations and the available methods that can be used to reduce the risks. These electrical hazards can be generally grouped as either secondary voltage shock or stray welding current faults. The talk will reinforce the best practices available to prevent harm from arc welding electricity, and to explore hazard reduction devices (engineering controls) that are evolving, but that are not yet in widespread use. The risks associated with stray welding current faults, and the potential damage that can occur to electrical systems from these faults, will also be discussed.
