The Influence of Process Gas Modulation on the Solidification Microstructure of PTA Hardfacing Welds
The microstructure of hardface welds is important in regard to wear resistance and cracking susceptibility. Using a plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding process, the modulation of process gases offers several possibilities to influence the final microstructure of the hardfacing and the distribution of second phase reinforcement particles. In this manuscript, results of a study are presented, where the basic influence of modulated gas flows on the solidification behavior of PTA hardfacing welds was investigated. In the context of creating modulated gas flows and its impact on weld bead properties, the effects on the microstructure, distribution of reinforcement particles and influence on mechanical properties are pointed out. It can be concluded that when the weld pool is excited in a certain manner, the mechanical properties of the weld deposit, especially toughness, can be improved.
