Use of Acoustic Emission Testing on Bridges for Monitoring Failures
Fatigue cracking on fracture critical components is a major concern for steel infrastructure. Over 100 steel bridges have been monitored since the start of the program. Critical components, such as eyebars, beams, stringers, pin and hangers, box girders, I-beams, orthotropic decks, rivets, shear studs, and gusset plates are remotely monitored, using wireless technology with acoustic emission transducers. Suspect areas are then categorized using a full array of NDE techniques such as phased array, strain gauge, vibration, computed radiography, TOFD UT, R & C Scan (corrosion mapping), and rope access inspection. Similar analysis can be performed on suspension bridges and concrete bridges. The paper will provide an overview of this methodology.
