New Remote Control Advancements Drive Productivity, Quality and Safety

Remote control capabilities in welding applications – the ability to change welding parameters at the welding joint versus traveling back and forth to the power source – have evolved in recent years to eliminate cords and control cables, and in some cases now allow welders to change processes with the simple push of the button or by changing an accessory.

While seemingly simple, these technologies offer three primary benefits to welding applications in industries such as oil and gas, shipbuilding and construction:

  • Productivity: Many jobsites in these industries are expansive. The welding may actually be taking place hundreds of feet from the power source. Allowing welders to make all critical process adjustments and parameter changes at the joint eliminates the time it takes welders to travel back and forth to the machine. This leads to more arc-on time and more welds being completed.
  • Quality: Putting welding controls next to the work location help encourage proper machine settings and ensure quality – critical when code-quality work is being performed, such as in process piping applications.
  • Safety: Remote controls reduce the need for workers to travel back and forth to the welding power source. In many applications, this can be hundreds of feet and through jobsite obstacles. Eliminating exposure to these dangers by keeping the welder at the joint significantly improves safety (and curtails downtime and possible employee injury costs). New technologies also eliminate cables that create tripping hazards and clutter.

This presentation will discuss an array of technologies that provide these benefits, including wireless remote technologies and new advanced process solutions that take remote controls to the next level.
