Non-Destructive Mapping of Stresses in Pipes and Welds by Neutron Diffraction

John Root

Presented At:
CWA Conference 2013

Neutron beams penetrate easily into full-scale weldments and pipes so that three-dimensional maps of stress can be made non-destructively in the vicinity of a fusion zone or region of plastic deformation. At AECL's Chalk River Laboratories, neutron stress scanning has been performed extensively for industry clients to validate field-inspection techniques, finite-element simulations, and stress-relieving treatments. Some examples will be shown to illustrate how the knowledge of stresses in welds and pipes can be applied to decisions for safety, fitness-for-service, and performance of pipelines.
