GMAW Process use to increase the Welding Productivity of Titanium
The GTAW process is very popular for welding titanium in most industries and it is relatively well known. On the other hand, the GMAW process is not widely used because it causes a lot of splatters. The recent development of pulsed synergic lines specific to titanium by the company Fronius allows from now on to weld titanium efficiently using the GMAW process with a higher rate of deposition than the GTAW and can thus turn out more productive in several applications.
Titanium is very reactive in ambient air above 550°C. To prevent oxidation during welding, we made inert gas protection jigs. Finally, the welding trials performed with the GTAW and the PAW gave us the opportunity to compare these two processes to the GMAW. The metallographic exams, as well as the hardness trials, demonstrate that the pulsed process GMAW gives similar results to the two other processes while having a higher rate of deposition.
