CanWeld Conference 2016

In recent years, various industry and government committees have collaborated to modernize and streamline the programs and regulations governing the training and certification of welders in Alberta. The 2014 Alberta Apprenticeship course outline for the Welder and Wire Process Operator trades was modernized to emphasize training for both wire-feed processes and manual welding, including the introduction of a common 鈥渃ore content鈥 for the trades during first year. In parallel, the Pressure Welders Regulation, as part of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, was amended in 2014 to address various industry concerns regarding the certification of pressure welders, welding examiners and associated trades (such as 鈥榝itters鈥) involved in fabrication/construction of pressure equipment. The regulation enhancements affected the certification processes for Grade B and C welders, and also introduced the Pressure Tack Welder and Welding Examiner in Training certification programs. Additionally, certification processes were harmonized to allow 3rd year apprentices to conduct their 鈥渋nitial B鈥 certification test while still at their training institute and be ready-for-work after completing their apprenticeship program. Other enhancements to modernize and streamline the training and certification processes were achieved.
