With cost of fuel rising unpredictably, a renewed emphasis is being placed on the use of lightweight materials in many transportation applications. The desire to carry greater payloads by truck, rail, and ship without exceeding specified maximums, has also increased the need to reduce the weight of the transport vehicle itself. Where aluminum is used to accomplish this task, the need to control the cost of welding is critical as it greatly influences the further use of this material. The performance of the shielding gas and consumable wire electrode used can significantly impact this total cost of welding.
