In surveys of manufacturers, the shortage of skilled welders ranks as one of the most important materials joining challenges facing industry. As experienced welders retire, the need for new welders is expected to continue to grow. This need is especially acute in heavy fabrication industries, such as shipbuilding, mining, power plant repair, and pipeline construction, which employ a large number of skilled welders. Heavy fabricators are seeking technologies to reduce the time and cost to train welders, while increasing the welder skill level. It is desirable for the technology to quantify the trainees鈥 performance to better screen applicants, identify skill deficiencies, and provide real-time coaching for skill improvement. Advanced training technology is also seen to be a means to attract young people to welding careers by countering the common perception of welding as 鈥渓ow-tech鈥.
