SMAW had historically dominated the pipe welding industry, whereas more effective, modern approaches have emerged. Modifi ed short circuit processes (STT â„¢, RMD â„¢ etc) for pipe root welding have successfully increased overall productivity. Today, the prevalent welding processes for process pipe welding for pipes under 1 inch thickness are: 1. GTAW for root and FCAW on fi ll and cap passes or 2. Modifi ed short circuit waveforms for root and MCAW for fi ll and cap passes
