Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing - Large-Scale 3D Metal Printing
When: Tuesday, December 3rd
Where: 909 Kipling Avenue Toronto, ON M8Z 5H3
This presentation will provide an overview of the Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology that essentially turns a standard arc-welding robotic system into a large-scale 3D printer of high-quality metallic components. Extensive testing of steel alloys produced with this method demonstrates that it can produce very high-quality materials with good-strength, ductility, and low-temperature toughness. This process can be used to create low-volume replacements for ferrous or non-ferrous castings or forgings, hybrid or multi-alloy components, and it opens many other unique opportunities for previously impossible designs. Since 2016, students, supported by faculty at Conestoga College, have undertaken a variety of capstone projects designed to unlock the potential of the WAAM process. Some of their work in WAAM process development, material performance evaluation, CAD-to-Print, and final quality assessment will be showcased in this presentation.
