Educators Conference 2018

For the past several years, various industry and government committees have collaborated to modernize and streamline requirements for the training and certification of welders in Alberta. In 2014, the Alberta Apprenticeship course outline for the Welder and Wire Process Operator trades was modernized to emphasize training for both wire-feed processes and manual welding. In parallel, the Pressure Welders Regulation was amended to address various industry concerns regarding the certification of pressure welders, welding examiners and associated trades (such as ‘fitters’) involved in pressure equipment fabrication. The regulation enhancements affected the certification processes for Grade B and C welders, including apprentice welders, and also introduced the Pressure Tack Welder and Welding Examiner in Training certification programs. A new review cycle of the regulations has been initiated, and new options for the regulations of welders are under discussion. The paper will review these past changes and discuss potential changes in the future.Ìý
