Welding Engineering Technology Industry Night

First and second year Welding Engineering Technology (WET) students are invited to this industry networking event. This will include a Q&A period for an industry panel designed to allow students to see a line of sight for future careers in the welding industry and allow them an opportunity to ask questions to industry representatives.

Student Paper Award- Feb 25th Deadline

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to have at least 2 groups of SAIT WET students prepare a technical paper and present their findings for a panel of judges. The paper can be on any topic of their choosing鈥╮elated to their field of study: materials, welding, joining, inspection, etc. The paper must be original work completed by the submitting group. This work should include data or information procured by the group themselves and is not intended to come entirely from internet findings. Students are encouraged to carry over work from their in class projects as long as the work is authentic and completed only by the group members. Group size can be individuals to a maximum of two people.鈥ㄢ

DISCUSSION:鈥═he presentations and papers will be judged by a panel of 3 to 5 judges selected from the CWBA organizing committee. The winning group and second place group will be declared at the end of the鈥╬resentations in March 2019 (Exact Day TBA).鈥ㄢ–WB Association will award $1000 to the best and $500 to the second place recipients.鈥ㄢ

The equipment you have in your shop or in the field can make or break your ability to be able to perform different jobs, win bids and, ultimately, be successful in today's ultra competitive environment. He'll walk us through the different ownership options available and how best to manage changes in technology.

Tour: SAIT Art Smith Aero Centre

The CWB Calgary Chapter has been invited to an exclusive tour of SAIT鈥檚 Art Smith Aero Centre. The Art Smith Aero Centre for Training and Technology at SAIT offers four aviation-related training programs: Avionics Technology, Aircraft Structures Technician, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Technology and Introduction to Aircraft 阴APP导航 Testing. Occupying 17 acres of land at the Calgary International Airport, the Aero Centre includes custom labs for sheet metal, composite material, gas turbine, avionics, helicopter, reciprocating engine, and aircraft maintenance. The facility is also home to dozens of aircraft, including jets, helicopters, and a vintage fighter. The evening event will begin at 6:00pm and will include a tour of the facility, followed by a catered networking dinner. Space is limited. RSVPs will open for those responding to the e-News invite.

Presentation Abstract:

CSA Standard W47.1 鈥溡魽PP导航 of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel鈥 includes new provisions for testing of welding personnel and procedures that will help fabricators welding steel materials less than 3mm thickness, stainless-steel materials of all thicknesses and for robotic welding applications. CSA W47.1 will have its own provisions for testing of welding personnel and procedures specific for Marine industry. Significant changes have been made to Annexes E and G 鈥淩equirements for Impact (CVN) and Hardness Testing 鈥 in order to address gaps in the requirements for testing and to ensure an easier adoption and interpretation by industry.

Welding Defects of Category D Joints Found in Compressor Packages

Presentation Abstract:
Rick Marsden will be discussing the results of a study of weld defects found in Category D welds in vessels installed in compressor packages. This study was conducted as part of an accident investigation. The study identified a widespread industry concern relating to Category D welds.
