CWA CALGARY AND RED FLAME INDUSTRIES - HOT TAP DEMONSTRATION

Wednesday, January 17, 2018
6:00PM

Pyramid Prefab Piping, 7540 114 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2C 4T3

CWA Calgary is hosting Morgan Dull of Red Flame Industries for a pipeline Hot Tap demonstration. The demonstration will include an example of a coupon drill out, a mock-up of "hot line" welding and a technical presentation. This will be an exciting event with one of our industry's leaders in hot tap welding. Please note that there is limited capacity for this exclusive function and unlike most CWA meetings, dinner will not accompany this presentation.

Speaker Profile– Morgan Dull P.Eng

Morgan Dull graduated from the Welding Engineering Technology program at SAIT in 2005 and worked in Calgary and Ft. McMurray doing mechanical testing, Quality Control, as a Welding Technologist, and Welding Examiner. In 2008 he began a co-op degree program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria. While at the University of Victoria he was a member of the Formula SAE team which involved TIG welding structural parts and engine components for a race car. In 2013 Morgan graduated UVic and has been with Red Flame Industries since that time.

Dinner Meeting: Pipelines in Alberta – Design, Welding, Commissioning & Monitoring

Wednesday, November 22, 2017 6:00PM
Calgary Rugby Union, 9025 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary AB T2C 4R6

Dr. Mal Farrokhzad of SAIT will be discussing pipeline in Alberta, including CSA Z662 Code requirements for design of pipeline with respect to general design (section 4 of Z662) and welding (section 7 of CSA Z662), welding (from design, to installation to commissioning), and weld monitoring through integrity tools.

Speaker Profile:

Mal Farrokhzad, PhD, P. Eng. is a principle and consultant engineer and experimental researcher with over 20 years of experience in mechanical and materials engineering related topics. Currently, he is an instructor (materials and welding metallurgy) with Welding Engineering Technology (WET) Program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Mal holds a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary. For the last 15 years his career’s main focus has been design, engineering analysis and material testing of pipelines for the energy sector in industry and academia. On mechanical engineering side, he has been involved with stress analysis and finite element analysis of pipelines and piping components as well as hydraulic analysis for transporting gas and liquids through pipelines. On materials side, his main work has focused on material selection, failure analysis, corrosion & erosion analysis, hydrogen measurement on steel, high temperature oxidation and wear of Cer-Met and HVOF coatings. Mal has 15 publications in peer reviewed journals and has taught structural analysis of buried pipeline for Pipeline Engineering Center at the University of Calgary.

Calgary Rugby Union, 9025 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary

RSVP: buy tickets here or e-mail calgary@cwamembers.org (member $30, non-member $35, $15 students)

Summary: This entertaining presentation pinpoints the industry’s reluctance to change and contrasts the easy steps leading to improved productivity. Welding methods, processes and parameters all play a part in the finished weld. Quality also improves when productivity is done properly. The presenter strongly believes that no matter what the present procedures are, improvements are always possible and various examples of efficiency gains are always achievable. Welding economics are taught and pointed out in this presentation. We are all now in the global market and the need for welding productivity methods and techniques has never been greater.
