Edmonton
Welcome to the Edmonton Chapter page. Thank you for visiting our page, and on behalf of the Chapter we hope to see you at one of our events.
The Chapter centers itself in the city of Edmonton and includes the surrounding communities of Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan and Leduc among others.听 Almost every nearby community has industrial parks and construction sites that employ many in the welding industry.听 Much of the welding fabrication work supports the oil and gas exploration and development projects taking place in Northern Alberta, along with structural fabrication for plant site modules and commercial buildings.听 Edmonton also has the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) offering engineering technology programs and apprenticeship training, the University of Alberta with the Canadian Centre of Welding and Joining, and Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF).听
The Chapter has been in the region beginning with the Welding Institute of Canada (WIC) over thirty years ago and part of the CWB Association for nearly the past twenty years. We have over 5000 CWB Association members in the region. The growth of the CWB Association has been reflective within the Edmonton Chapter, and we intend to offer our members and non-members alike educational and networking opportunities. The Chapter plans on dinner meetings, usually at the University of Alberta Faculty Club monthly from January to May. We also like to have a site tour for either the fall or spring trying to avoid the early or late winter storms that are part of seasonal living in Edmonton! We also plan joint meetings with our fellow technical societies like AWS and ASM, among others, in hosting mutually interesting topics.听 We usually charge $30.00 for members and $35.00 for non-members.

Application of PTA in Rail Wheels Manufacturing: Welding of Steel Bridge Segment featuring videography of SMAW and GTAW
Zoom Meeting (meeting link via Eventbrite): Wednesday, November 24th, 2021
Time: Reception at 7:00PM and Presentations at 7:05 PM MDT
Presented By: Carter Trautmann and Wesley Lesburg.
The rail industry in Canada transports more than 300 Million tonnes of goods annually and only continues to grow year over year. One of the primary consumables for the rail transport industry is the wheel. Traditionally cast as a single piece, used until worn down, and removed from service. We hope that by applying the unique properties of Plasma Transferred Arc Welding (PTAW), additional steps can be introduced into this process.

Journey of a Welder 鈥 Presented by AWOC
Zoom Meeting (meeting link via Eventbrite): Wednesday, May 26th, 2021
Time: 2:00 PM 鈥 3:00 PM EDT
鈥ㄢ≒resented by: Matthew Yarmuch and Richard Walmsley
Join us for this 鈥淟unch-n-Learn鈥 presentation on industry updates from both Alberta Welding Optimization Committee (AWOC) and NAIT.
There are reports that the average age of a welder in Canada is 55+ years old. Industry, stakeholders, and government need to collaborate to ensure new Welders are drawn into the welding field and effectively retained 鈥 something easier said than done. This presentation will focus on discussing ways to ensure the welder 鈥 the individual person 鈥 is the focus of attention during their apprenticeship, shop-floor training, and certification to industry standards and regulations.

History of Submerged Arc Welding
Online Meeting via Zoom, Wednesday, December 2nd
Reception at 7:00 PM (MT)
Presentations at 7:05 PM
The cost is $10.00 Members, $15.00 Non-Members, $5.00 Student Members. All members of ASM, ASME, AWS, CWA, NACE, and SME will be charged as members.
Presenter: Vivek Sengupta. This talk presents a comprehensive literature review of experiments and theories addressing the physical phenomena in the weld zone of submerged arc welding (SAW). This review covers more than 100 years of research and literature in English, German, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese. Phenomena explored include metal transfer, arc length, the nature and chemical reactions in the arc cavity and slag shell, and the dynamics of the weld pool. Techniques described include general tools such as X-ray and optical imaging, radioactive tracers, and numerical simulations, and also creative experiments addressing particular questions such as the weather vane technique used to determine weld pool flows...

Predicting Laser Cladding Characteristics and Hydrogen Testing
Online Meeting, Thursday, October 29th- 9:00-10:00 PM EDT
Meeting Presentation Topics:
1) Predicting Bead Size and Catchment Efficiency in Laser Cladding Processes
Laser cladding is an advanced repair technology that is seeing increased use in mining and downhole drilling applications. This state-of-the-art technology provides tailored surface modification for wear and corrosion protection as well as dimensional repairs for high-value industrial components.
2) Progress on Hydrogen Testing at the CCWJ
Hydrogen testing is a destructive test method to evaluate the content of diffusible hydrogen in a weld. The standardized protocol in codes for carrying out hydrogen test is sophisticated and requires immense accuracy and dexterity.
Presenters:
Syed Alam is currently completing his MSc in Welding Engineering with a focus in process automation of laser cladding at the University of Alberta. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering. Mackenzi Johnston is a Material engineering student who started her career with practical welding training from SAIT. Syed and Mackenzi are the recipients of CWBA Edmonton chapter graduate and undergraduate scholarships in 2020 for their excellence in research in the field of welding.

Welding Procedures for New or Problematic Cases
Online Meeting Via ZOOM, Tuesday, July 14th- 12:00 MST
The CWB Association Edmonton Chapter and U of A Student Chapter would like to invite you to join us for our first online technical talk. Prof Mendez will be discussing work the CCWJ has been doing to help develop welding procedures for new and difficult materials. When welding procedures need to be developed, we use past experience. This past experience has been acquired painfully over time or might be compiled in lists of previous procedures, such as the Lincoln Procedure Handbook or AWS B2.1 standards. This approach works almost all the time鈥 except when it doesn鈥檛. In that case, we have very few tools at our disposal, mainly keep trying to change things intuitively until the procedure qualifies.听
