Welcome to the Edmonton Chapter page. Thank you for visiting our page, and on behalf of the Chapter we hope to see you at one of our events.

The Chapter centers itself in the city of Edmonton and includes the surrounding communities of Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan and Leduc among others.听 Almost every nearby community has industrial parks and construction sites that employ many in the welding industry.听 Much of the welding fabrication work supports the oil and gas exploration and development projects taking place in Northern Alberta, along with structural fabrication for plant site modules and commercial buildings.听 Edmonton also has the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) offering engineering technology programs and apprenticeship training, the University of Alberta with the Canadian Centre of Welding and Joining, and Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF).听

The Chapter has been in the region beginning with the Welding Institute of Canada (WIC) over thirty years ago and part of the CWB Association for nearly the past twenty years. We have over 5000 CWB Association members in the region. The growth of the CWB Association has been reflective within the Edmonton Chapter, and we intend to offer our members and non-members alike educational and networking opportunities. The Chapter plans on dinner meetings, usually at the University of Alberta Faculty Club monthly from January to May. We also like to have a site tour for either the fall or spring trying to avoid the early or late winter storms that are part of seasonal living in Edmonton! We also plan joint meetings with our fellow technical societies like AWS and ASM, among others, in hosting mutually interesting topics.听 We usually charge $30.00 for members and $35.00 for non-members.

DESIGN FOR LIFE: SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT WEAR

This talk will give an overview of the options available for hardfacing, reviewing both the application processes and overlay types. This will include background information on the performance criteria requested in the current generation of qualification specifications. In addition, a review of new technologies, such as the 3D printing of large scale metallic components will also be presented.

Determination of Temperature, Density, and Composition of Welding Arcs and Evaluating Methods for Preparing Charpy Samples

Determination of temperature, density and composition for an arc plasma can be a tool to assess the quality of a weld. An understanding of the welding arc is also a critical input to model the underlying physics of welding. Nonintrusive optical diagnostics of an arc plasma have become more popular as they can profile the temperature of the welding arc without disturbing the arc itself. New equipment and procedures are being developed to improve quality and ease of use with these methods.

AM can benefit the industry in Alberta with its ability to make or repair parts, freedom in design and the ability to adapt complex geometries to manufacturing.

The Alberta Welding Optimization Committee (AWOC) was created in January 2013 by a few passionate industry professionals with the intent of promoting the science, engineering and trade of welding in the province of Alberta. Over the past six years AWOC has hosted 4 town-hall meetings and has created multiple positive influences in the Alberta welding industry. Recently AWOC became a registered not-for-profit Society maintaining the same original intent of the Committee.

Presentation Abstract:

CSA Standard W47.1 鈥溡魽PP导航 of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel鈥 includes new provisions for testing of welding personnel and procedures that will help fabricators welding steel materials less than 3mm thickness, stainless-steel materials of all thicknesses and for robotic welding applications. CSA W47.1 will have its own provisions for testing of welding personnel and procedures specific for Marine industry. Significant changes have been made to Annexes E and G 鈥淩equirements for Impact (CVN) and Hardness Testing 鈥 in order to address gaps in the requirements for testing and to ensure an easier adoption and interpretation by industry.

From Laser Cladding to Additive Manufacturing: Value Added Coatings and Features on Engineered Components

TOPIC-

Laser cladding is a robust production weld overlay technique that provides a unique combination of benefits for wear resistant hardfacing, corrosion resistant overlays and dimensional repairs. Laser cladding provides all the benefits of a metallurgical bond that is characteristic of conventional weld techniques, but with a substantially lower heat input. This reduced heat input is a key advantage and allows for a minimized heat affected zone (HAZ) and reduced risk of distortion. Due to the nature of the process, dissimilar metal welding is not only possible, but commonplace.

Dr. Douglas J. Hamre is the Research and Development Manager at Apollo-Clad Laser Cladding Ltd. (A Division of Apollo Machine & Welding). Originally from Edmonton, Doug attended the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, where he received a B.Sc. in 2001 and a Ph.D. in 2005 both in the field of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Doug returned to the Edmonton area in 2011 to join Apollo-Clad after working in the investment casting industry making Titanium and Superalloy investment castings for aerospace and power generation applications. Doug is also a Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta.

INTRODUCTION TO HOT TAPPING WITH LIVE DEMONSTRATION

Originating as a segment of Red Flame firefighting services, hot taps were utilized as a method of directing water and/or other solutions to prevent or kill pipeline blowouts or fires. In 1996, the company saw the potential for standard piping system applications and Red Flame Hot Tap Services was born. They have developed stringent in-service weld procedures, NDT inspections and fitting styles to suit nearly every application.
